Hyperliquid, the decentralized finance exchange processing an impressive $6 billion in daily derivatives volume, has officially waded into the high-stakes world of prediction markets, putting established players like Kalshi and Polymarket on notice.
Over the weekend, the dominant decentralized derivatives platform launched its initial batch of outcome contracts. According to Hyunsu Jung, CEO of Hyperion DeFi, the early numbers generated by the debut have already turned heads across the industry. Hyperion DeFi operates as a U.S. publicly traded company that actively accumulates Hyperliquid’s native HYPE token.
Jung revealed to DL News that the platform’s inaugural Bitcoin outcome market performed exceptionally well, generating roughly three times the trading volume of equivalent markets on Polymarket and Kalshi combined.
"This proves that having a shared liquidity layer is effective in converting users," Jung said. He added that branching into binary markets represents an obvious next step in building out the comprehensive financial stack on Hyperliquid. The platform already enjoys meaningful dominance in crypto perpetuals and, throughout the first half of 2026, has thoroughly demonstrated the expanding possibilities of around-the-clock, real-world asset trading.
This high-profile launch thrusts Hyperliquid into direct competition with established prediction heavyweights Polymarket and Kalshi. Furthermore, according to a research note shared with DL News by Bernstein analysts Gautam Chhugani and his colleagues, the timing of this strategic expansion could hardly be more significant for the broader digital assets landscape.
In a clear signal of how seriously traditional Wall Street finance is taking the sector, Bernstein has officially expanded its digital assets research coverage. The firm is now tracking prediction markets as one of three core trends, placing them right alongside the rapid growth of tokenisation and stablecoins.
Fund Managers Circling
The Bernstein memo frames Hyperliquid’s aggressive entry into prediction markets against a broader structural shift that is only just beginning to register on traditional institutional radar screens.
According to Bernstein’s analysis, prediction market contracts provide macro-focused hedge funds with a significantly cleaner mechanism to hedge event risk compared to traditional financial instruments. When institutional managers rely on standard foreign exchange options or commodity exposures, they often introduce unwanted basis risk, a scenario where the underlying asset price partially moves before the target event officially resolves.

In contrast, a binary contract defined by a precise question—such as whether the United States will impose tariffs exceeding 25% on European Union goods in 2026—settles solely on the binary outcome itself. In these structures, the premium, maximum potential loss, and final payout are known in advance, offering institutional risk managers unprecedented clarity.
Kalshi has already taken the early lead on the institutional adoption front. Just last week, the regulated platform executed its first bespoke block trade, brokered by Greenlight Commodities. The transaction, tied directly to the clearing price at California’s May carbon allowance auction, took place between a Houston-based environmental hedge fund and market-making titan Jump Trading Group. Additionally, institutional prime broker Clear Street recently partnered with Kalshi to become the first institutional futures commission merchant capable of providing regulated clearing access to prediction markets for hedge funds.
Meanwhile, Hyperliquid’s dedicated prediction product, known as HIP-4, inherits the platform’s already robust institutional credentials out of the gate.
The underlying infrastructure has spent months securing top-tier institutional backing. FalconX launched prime brokerage margin financing for Hyperliquid earlier in February, introducing cross-venue margining across major centralized exchanges like Binance, OKX, Bybit, and Deribit against a unified collateral pool. Simultaneously, Ripple Prime—which clears more than $3 trillion annually—added Hyperliquid as its very first decentralized finance venue. Anchorage Digital, operating as the sole federally chartered crypto bank in the United States, also provides institutional-grade custody and staking support for the HYPE token.
What to Watch
Looking ahead, Hyperliquid CEO Hyunsu Jung emphasizes that market participants should closely monitor key performance metrics, specifically volume and open interest growth, alongside the types of contracts the platform chooses to list next.
While HIP-4 debuted with narrow Bitcoin price outcomes, the product suite is widely expected to expand rapidly into HYPE and Ether contracts. Furthermore, the platform plans to move beyond its initial 15-minute timeframes to capture longer-duration macro trends.
The competitive landscape is expanding at a breakneck pace. Combined monthly trading volumes across Polymarket and Kalshi surged to nearly $24 billion in April, according to data compiled by Bernstein. Kalshi currently commands a dominant 62% market share, climbing from 55% in January, a surge heavily propelled by its success in sports betting, which now accounts for roughly 72% of its overall volume.
As the sector heats up, full permissionless deployment for third-party teams on Hyperliquid is expected to roll out around mid-June. This timeline is strategically aligned to coincide with the FIFA World Cup, historically recognized as one of the highest-volume events in the entire history of prediction markets. Already, the upcoming 2026 World Cup has emerged as Polymarket’s second-largest market by all-time cumulative volume, having already pulled in an impressive $884 million.
