World Liberty Financial Expands USD1 Stablecoin Payments to Major Web2 Merchants Ahead of Trust Charter Rollout

World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the high-profile decentralized finance venture backed by members of United States President Donald Trump’s family, has announced major strategic ambitions to bring its USD1 stablecoin payment infrastructure to mainstream online merchants. The sweeping plans were unveiled during a prominent panel discussion at the Token2049 conference in Singapore, marking a significant step forward for the digital asset project as it seeks to bridge the gap between blockchain-based financial products and traditional e-commerce platforms.

During the panel session, which focused heavily on the evolving landscape of stablecoins and digital payments, WLFI Chief Executive Officer Zach Witkoff and co-founder Zak Folkman took the stage alongside Mesh co-founder and CEO Bam Azizi. The discussion provided industry participants with a clearer look at how digital currencies are moving beyond speculative trading and transitioning into practical, everyday transactional tools for global commerce.

The centerpiece of the announcement came when Azizi revealed a strategic partnership between WLFI and Mesh. This collaboration is designed to enable holders of the USD1 stablecoin to seamlessly spend their digital assets across the extensive merchant network powered by Mesh’s payment infrastructure. According to the executives, the initial rollout of this capability is slated to take place during the current quarter, potentially opening up a vast new ecosystem of online vendors to the Trump-linked stablecoin.

Building upon this integration, Folkman emphasized that the ambition of the project extends far beyond the boundaries of the native World Liberty mobile application or proprietary ecosystem. He told the audience that the venture is actively engaged in planning sessions to deploy this exact same payment settlement technology to some of the largest Web2 businesses operating in the global digital marketplace. By integrating stablecoin payment rails into mainstream web infrastructure, WLFI aims to provide traditional online retailers with a faster, more efficient alternative to legacy credit card processing and traditional banking rails.

The USD1 stablecoin itself is structured as a digital currency pegged to maintain a steady value of one US dollar. At the time of the announcement, the token’s total market capitalization stood at approximately $4.45 billion, according to data from CoinGecko, reflecting substantial liquidity and adoption within the digital asset economy. Currently, the stablecoin is issued by digital asset infrastructure provider BitGo, with its underlying reserves meticulously backed by a conservative mix of cash, United States government money market funds, or equivalent short-term cash instruments designed to ensure stability and user redeemability.

WLFI Seeks to Take Over USD1 Issuance via Federal Trust Charter

While the stablecoin currently relies on BitGo for its operational issuance, WLFI is actively working to bring the issuance process in-house through regulatory channels. In August, the project achieved a major milestone when the United States Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) granted conditional approval for WLFI to establish a national trust bank. This federal charter is intended to authorize the institution to directly issue dollar-backed stablecoins and provide specialized digital asset custody services.

According to Zach Witkoff, obtaining this regulatory green light will fundamentally transform the operational structure of the project by cutting out external intermediaries and allowing the venture to manage its monetary products directly. Speaking on the strategic implications of the charter, Witkoff noted that while the project currently relies on external partners for issuance, the establishment of their own trust bank will enable them to take full ownership of that vital responsibility moving forward.

However, the journey toward regulatory approval has not been without controversy or political friction. The OCC’s decision to grant conditional approval to the Trump-linked venture drew swift and sharp pushback from Capitol Hill. Prominent lawmakers, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, raised serious ethics concerns and alleged significant conflicts of interest stemming from the intersection of presidential family ties and commercial cryptocurrency ventures. In direct response to the regulatory approval and the broader questions surrounding financial ethics in high office, Senator Warren and several legislative colleagues introduced the Ending Presidential Corruption in Banking Act.

Despite the intense political scrutiny and legislative pushback, federal banking regulators defended their review process. Representatives for the OCC maintained that agency leadership and professional staff carried out their statutory duties and ethical obligations in strict accordance with the law while evaluating the trust bank application on its merits.

Addressing the controversy directly during the Singapore conference panel, Witkoff framed the conditional approval as a hard-fought victory achieved despite what he characterized as coordinated political opposition and hostile media coverage. He described the regulatory milestone as an achievement realized in spite of the various attacks directed at the project, signaling that the leadership team remains undeterred by political headwinds as they press forward with their commercial expansion strategies in global markets.
