Bitmine Immersion Technologies Has Finished Accumulating Ether, Setting a Strict 5% Supply Ceiling, Says Chairman Tom Lee

Bitmine Immersion Technologies has officially drawn a line in the sand regarding its digital asset treasury strategy, announcing that it will cap its holdings at precisely 5% of the total circulating supply of Ether.

The announcement was delivered by company Chairman Tom Lee during a high-profile keynote address at the Token2049 conference in Singapore on Wednesday. Speaking to an audience of industry leaders, developers, and investors, Lee revealed that Bitmine is currently standing right at the doorstep of this threshold. Having steadily accumulated roughly 6 million Ether over the course of several strategic acquisition phases, the company now commands approximately 4.9% of the entire Ethereum supply. According to Lee, Bitmine requires only about 100,000 additional tokens to officially reach its self-imposed target.

"That’s a hard cap. We’re not gonna be accumulating past 5%," Lee told the audience during his keynote speech, emphasizing the definitive nature of the corporate policy. "We’re not gonna own more than 5% of Ethereum."

The definitive stance marks a notable shift from earlier statements where the executive had left the door open for extended acquisition horizons. Previously, Lee had suggested that the company’s ultimate treasury goals might remain flexible depending on the broader pace of Ethereum adoption across global financial markets. In an extensive interview with the Bankless podcast back in August, Lee had hinted that corporate leadership might revisit the possibility of expanding past the 5% threshold by the year 2027. However, the latest statements from Singapore confirm that Bitmine has solidified its plans and chosen a firm boundary.

Bitmine says it is “done stacking” Ether

Reflecting on the journey that brought the company to this historic milestone, Lee pointed out that the vast majority of Bitmine’s massive Ether accumulation took place during what he characterized as a prolonged cryptocurrency bear market. By executing aggressive purchasing strategies while broader market sentiment was depressed and asset prices were heavily discounted, the firm was able to amass its multi-billion-dollar treasury without triggering catastrophic price slippage for retail participants, while simultaneously building a formidable institutional footprint.

Bitmine sets 5% Ether supply ‘hard cap’ as accumulation target nears

"We did all this buying in a bear market," Lee explained, reflecting on the macroeconomic environment that facilitated their accumulation strategy. "We protected the downside for ETH because we were buying. But now, we’re done stacking in front of a 25X move."

The decision to establish a strict 5% hard cap is deeply intertwined with Bitmine’s broader corporate capital strategy and financial planning. By officially signaling the end of its aggressive accumulation phase, the company aims to eliminate the ongoing necessity to raise substantial external capital solely for the purpose of purchasing more digital assets from the open market.

This pivot, Lee argues, positions the company uniquely for outperformance as market cycles evolve.

"So if we have a 5% hard cap, that means we’re gonna outperform ETH on the way up, right?" Lee posed to the audience. "’Cause you don’t have to worry about us trying to raise capital. We’re done."

The journey to establishing this enormous crypto treasury has required sophisticated maneuvering within traditional capital markets. Earlier this year, in June, Bitmine turned heads across both the traditional financial sector and the digital asset economy by launching a $300 million perpetual preferred stock offering, paving a novel path for institutional capital integration. Momentum continued to build through the summer months, and by early August, the company reported that it had successfully repurchased 16.1 million common shares as part of its expansive $4 billion share buyback program.

Even though Bitmine’s active open-market purchasing era has come to an end, the company’s digital asset reserves will not remain entirely static. The firm’s participation in network consensus through staking is expected to continually generate substantial yields, potentially adding to Bitmine’s total asset pool over time. To maintain strict compliance with its newly established corporate ceiling, Lee has previously indicated that the company may strategically sell off portions of the ETH earned natively through staking rewards, ensuring that its total proportion of the circulating supply does not creep above the 5% limit.
