Prediction market platform Kalshi has achieved a significant milestone in its commodities division, with its newly introduced 15-minute gold contracts nearly doubling the estimated trading fees generated by equivalent Ether markets during the month of September. This surge in activity comes just weeks after the short-duration gold options were officially rolled out on the platform, signaling a rapidly growing appetite among retail and institutional traders for hyper-fast financial speculation.
According to data compiled by Predict Charts, the gold contracts—which allow traders to take immediate positions on whether the price of gold will rise or fall within tight 15-minute windows—generated approximately $5 million in estimated fees throughout September. By comparison, equivalent Ether-based short-duration contracts pulled in roughly $2.6 million over the same period. Despite the impressive debut of the gold products, Bitcoin maintained its position as the undisputed heavyweight on the platform, anchoring the crypto sector with an estimated $60.4 million in generated fees.
The rapid scaling of short-duration gold markets aligns with a broader, aggressive expansion of Kalshi’s commodities business. In a September corporate update, the company announced that its overall commodities trading volume had crossed the $400 million milestone within just seven months of operation. This figure represents a remarkable trajectory, standing at more than four times the volume that Kalshi’s cryptocurrency markets had generated at a comparable stage in their lifecycle.
Reflecting on this growth, the company noted that its early crypto markets successfully demonstrated the scalability of innovative new categories on the platform. Specifically, crypto products proved that specialized prediction market verticals could expand rapidly from tens of millions to billions of dollars in monthly volume, a blueprint that is now being successfully applied to traditional asset classes like precious metals.
Historical data from the platform underscores the explosive demand for short-duration instruments. After launching in December, 15-minute Bitcoin markets steadily climbed the ranks to become Kalshi’s largest market series outside of parlays by July. Simultaneously, short-duration Ether contracts experienced a massive surge, scaling from just 6.1 million contracts in January to an astounding 233 million contracts by July.

Although Ether’s 15-minute contracts continued their upward trajectory to reach 318 million contracts traded in September, they were ultimately overshadowed by the sudden and aggressive adoption of gold. Driven by intense trader interest, the gold markets recorded an unprecedented 542 million contracts traded during that same single month, highlighting how traditional safe-haven assets can capture substantial market share when packaged into high-frequency prediction formats. The rapid ascension of these commodities coincides with widespread industry reports that Kalshi is engaged in advanced discussions to secure a new funding round at a staggering $400 billion valuation.
Short-Duration Markets Drive the Bulk of Non-Sport Fees
The broader market dynamics reveal that short-duration financial products are increasingly becoming the financial engine of Kalshi’s entire ecosystem. An independent analysis published by InGame highlighted that 15-minute crypto, commodity, and traditional financial markets collectively generated $20.4 million in fees during the single seven-day period leading up to October 5. This massive tally accounted for roughly 80 percent of the platform’s total non-sport fee revenue over that timeframe.
Furthermore, the InGame data analysis underscored that short-duration instruments punch well above their weight class when it comes to revenue generation. Over the analyzed week, these hyper-fast markets accounted for approximately 13 percent of Kalshi’s total trading volume, yet they disproportionately contributed 20 percent of the platform’s overall fee intake.
Industry analysts attribute this revenue concentration to the unique mechanics of the platform’s pricing structure. Kalshi employs a fee formula that is directly tied to the implied probabilities or odds of a given contract. Consequently, fees represent a higher share of total volume on contracts priced near even-money 50/50 odds, compared to heavily skewed contracts featuring massive favorites or extreme longshots where the outcome is heavily priced in. As traders flock to these razor-thin, highly volatile windows where probabilities frequently hover near the midpoint, the platform benefits from enhanced fee efficiency.
As Kalshi continues to refine and expand its product offerings, the blending of high-frequency trading mechanics with traditional commodities and digital assets is reshaping how retail-focused prediction markets operate. With gold successfully challenging established crypto favorites in fee generation and short-duration contracts capturing the lion’s share of platform revenue, the company’s strategic pivot into hyper-fast financial speculation continues to yield substantial commercial momentum.
