Strategy Shares Surge Over 50% as Bitcoin Surpasses $80,000 Ahead of Q1 Earnings

Strategy is riding a powerful wave of momentum. Shares of the world’s largest corporate holder of Bitcoin have surged by more than 50% over the past month, mirroring the premier cryptocurrency’s decisive climb past the $80,000 threshold. The explosive price action has caught short sellers off guard, forcing them to scramble for the exits as institutional capital floods back into the digital asset ecosystem.

On Monday, shares of MSTR climbed another 4% to reach nearly $184 per share, building significantly upon a robust 7% rally achieved on Friday. Early indicators from after-hours trading suggest the stock has continued its upward trajectory, inching up at least another 2% ahead of the company’s anticipated first-quarter earnings call scheduled for Tuesday.

This sustained market rally is underpinned by a surge in institutional demand. Data compiled by DefiLlama reveals that Bitcoin exchange-traded funds pulled in an impressive $827 million during just the first two trading days of May, successfully extending a powerful two-month winning streak. As the broader market rally gathered immense pace, more than $200 million in short positions were liquidated within a single 24-hour window.

Market observers widely view Strategy shares as a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin, with the corporate entity’s stock price historically maintaining a tight correlation with the movements of the underlying crypto asset.

According to Jake Kennis, senior research analyst at Nansen, Bitcoin’s recent breakthrough above $80,000 rests on sound market fundamentals. In an interview with DL News, Kennis pointed out that the funding rate—a critical indicator of market temperature—is currently hovering at a healthy hourly rate of 0.00045%. This reading remains well below the overheated metrics that traditionally foreshadow a sharp market correction.

"With $2.4 billion in open interest and daily perpetual volume of $3.4 billion outpacing spot turnover, derivatives are clearly playing a significant role in price discovery around this level," Kennis explained. He added that the moderate funding rate and balanced buy-to-sell ratio do not point toward the kind of extreme leverage accumulation that would typically signal an impending major pullback.

Q1 Earnings Call

Strategy shares soar 50% in a month as Bitcoin tops $80,000 ahead of Q1 earnings call

Attention across both traditional finance and the crypto sector is now firmly fixed on Strategy’s upcoming first-quarter financial disclosures.

Wall Street consensus estimates anticipate the company will report revenue of approximately $125 million, marking an increase from the $115 million recorded during the same period a year earlier. This top-line figure is expected to be accompanied by a standard accounting loss primarily linked to Bitcoin’s inherent price volatility and associated financing costs. However, sophisticated market participants are paying far less attention to traditional income statement metrics than to the sophisticated capital markets machine that founder Michael Saylor has engineered beneath the corporate umbrella.

Over recent quarters, Strategy has quietly executed a profound operational transformation. It has evolved from a traditional software enterprise holding a localized Bitcoin treasury into an innovative financing vehicle explicitly designed to channel institutional market demand directly into continuous Bitcoin exposure. The primary engine driving this financial mechanism is STRC, Strategy’s proprietary Bitcoin-backed preferred stock. Offering a variable dividend yield of approximately 11.5% annually, STRC has scaled rapidly to reach $8.5 billion in notional value in less than nine months of existence.

"The world’s $300 trillion credit market is a much bigger opportunity than the world’s roughly $2 trillion Bitcoin market, and Strategy has built the first product to bridge the two," Michael Saylor, Strategy’s founder and Executive Chairman, told attendees at the Bitcoin conference in Las Vegas.

The innovative debt instrument has already attracted major institutional players. BlackRock’s iShares Preferred & Income Securities ETF has established a notable $210 million position in STRC. According to Saylor, this financial instrument has successfully generated the capital necessary to finance the acquisition of roughly 77,000 Bitcoin so far this year—a volume reportedly ten times greater than the net inflows recorded by all United States spot Bitcoin ETFs combined over the exact same timeframe.

"STRC is a battery that stores Bitcoin gains and distributes them over time," noted Strategy CEO Phong Le in a public statement.

Demonstrating tactical discipline, Strategy temporarily paused its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation streak ahead of Tuesday’s earnings report. This marks only the second such strategic pause executed by the firm this year, according to statements shared by Saylor. Prior to the pause, the corporation’s most recent treasury addition incorporated 3,273 Bitcoin acquired at an average price of approximately $77,900.

Strategy is scheduled to officially release its comprehensive first-quarter financial results at 10:00 PM London time, or 5:00 PM US Eastern time, on Tuesday. Company leadership has confirmed plans to host a live question-and-answer session following the release, with special guest participants slated to be announced during the broadcast.
